Meeting with the guide, we cross the square and go to via Clavature to visit the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Vita with the Chapel of the “Lamentation over the Dead Christ” by Niccolò dall’Arca. Next, Piazza Maggiore and the buildings surrounding the square: Palazzo d’ Accursio, seat of the Municipality; the outside of the Palazzo dei Notai, Palazzo dei Banchi, Palazzo del Podestà and Palazzo Re Enzo; the Basilica of S. Petronio, the most famous and majestic church in Bologna, which was born from the desire of the Commune to build a church dedicated to the Patron saint who lived in the mid-fifth century. Fourth largest church in Europe, with 22 richly decorated chapels and the history of the personalities who lived and celebrated it. The best known is the Bolognini Chapel. The guided walk continues with the exploration of the medieval alleys and markets; the Palazzo della Mercanzia (the outside), which housed the headquarters of some Guilds as well as the Court of Merchants (Foro dei Mercanti); the Two Towers, symbol of the city, both of them leaning, located at the crossroads of the streets that led to the five gates of the ancient circle of walls “dei torresotti” (fortified gateways), whose names of Asinelli (the major) and Garisenda (the minor) take origin from the families to whom their construction is traditionally attributed.
